Choose the mat format for the exact machine before choosing its grip. Original Cricut Joy, Joy Xtra, Maker/Explore and Venture use different mat formats. Brother ScanNCut DX mats are also distinct from older ScanNCut mats.
After the format is right, choose enough adhesion to hold the material flat without making removal unnecessarily difficult. A worn mat may no longer behave like a new mat with the same label.
Match the physical system first
Read the machine name and the complete mat dimensions on the manufacturer page. The useful cutting area may be smaller than the outer mat, and a scanning area is a different measurement again. Do not trim another machine's mat to make it feed.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Machine family and generation | Loading guides and supported mat formats differ. |
| Width and length | Both the carriage width and supported project length constrain the choice. |
| Cutting versus scanning mat | A protective scanning surface may not tolerate a blade. |
| Card mat versus general mat | Card mats hold a folded card in a dedicated slot or panel. |
Use grip to match the material
For Cricut, LightGrip suits many light papers and printables; StandardGrip covers common cardstock, vinyl and iron-on; StrongGrip holds heavier stock and some specialty materials. FabricGrip belongs to fabric workflows, including the Maker Rotary Blade or the Explore Bonded-Fabric Blade. Follow the exact material guidance when a material could fall between categories.
Siser distinguishes light-tack mats for paper and backed decal material from high-tack mats for heavier material. Select the documented size as well as the adhesive level; extra tack does not correct a poorly aligned sheet.
Remove the cut without bending it
Wait for the machine to finish and follow the unload instruction. Support delicate paper as you separate it from the mat, using the maker's removal guidance. Keep the protective sheet and replace it for storage so loose fibres and dust do not cover the adhesive.
If material moves during cutting, inspect the surface contact and mat condition before raising blade force. If it tears on removal, reconsider both grip and the way the material is lifted.
Three Brother 12-inch mats, three different material choices
Match the material as well as the mat size. All three references below are 12 × 12 inches; their intended use differs. The standard and fabric listings explicitly identify ScanNCut DX. Keep the generation restriction when comparing a cheaper mat.
| Reference | Material or task | What changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| CADXMATLOW12 | Thin or delicate paper, including printer paper and vellum | Low tack helps with delicate paper. |
| CADXMATSTD12 | Cardstock and backed fabric | Standard grip; ScanNCut DX. |
| CADXMATF12 | Fabric without backing | DX only; one mat; Thin Fabric Auto Blade recommended separately. |
